Squirrel Monkey in Corcovado National Park

Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica is a remarkable treasure trove of biodiversity and conservation. Nestled on the stunning Osa Peninsula, this park is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Your adventure begins with a scenic boat ride from Uvita, a charming coastal town near the park. The ride takes an hour and a half depending on the sea conditions. You will ride around the southern tip of the Osa Peninsula and arrive at the Sirena Ranger Station, nestled in the heart of Corcovado. The station is surrounded by open grasslands, once part of an airfield. The airfield is no longer active, the area has been preserved, in case of an emergency.

Corcovado National Park holds the distinguished title of being the most biologically diverse place on Earth, as recognized by National Geographic. The park boasts an incredible array of bird species and trees. One fun fact is that this park has more tree species than in the entire continental United States and Canada combined. Corcovado is home to the largest population of jaguars in Central America, making it a crucial sanctuary for their conservation, but don’t be afraid, the Jaguars are not interested in humans and generally hunt at night.

An example of Corcovado’s fascinating natural wonders is the symbiotic relationship between acacia trees and ants. In the South Pacific region of Costa Rica, you can discover a unique species of acacia tree that hosts its own protective army of ants. The ants live on the tree and nest within its thorns. By releasing pheromones, they stimulate the growth of thorns, providing protection against potential threats. In return, the ants benefit from the tree’s nectar.

As you venture towards the Sirena River, where it meets the Pacific Ocean, you’ll come to appreciate the significance of the park’s marine ecosystem. While most exploration within Corcovado focuses on the inland areas, the ocean plays a vital role in conservation efforts. The park’s beaches play a major role in the ecosystem. They serve as nesting grounds for a few species of endangered sea turtles, and the park’s waters are home to a range of oceanic mammals, including dolphins and whales. Costa Rica has taken proactive measures to protect its oceans, recently achieving the global goal of conserving 30% of the world’s oceans, with Corcovado’s marine portion playing a significant role in this achievement.

Walking through the ancient forest, you’ll encounter trees that have stood tall for hundreds of years. Among them is the wild cashew tree, closely related to the domesticated cashew trees we are familiar with. Monkeys in the park rely on the fruits of these ancient trees for sustenance, highlighting the interconnectedness of the ecosystem and the vital role these trees play in supporting wildlife.

While exploring the forest, you may stumble upon a geological marvel—a stone with a perfectly circular hole in the middle. These rocks originated from ancient volcanic activity. When molten lava flowed through the forest, it engulfed the trees, eventually leaving behind hollow spaces as the organic matter decayed. These unique stones serve as a reminder of the park’s geological history and the forces that shaped its landscape.

The ranger station offers a comfortable space to rest and immerse oneself in the surrounding natural beauty. From the open porches, you can enjoy breathtaking views and appreciate the wonders of the park even from the comfort of the lodge.

Corcovado National Park has been incredibly successful in terms of wildlife sightings. During our stay, we had the privilege of observing the endangered white-lipped peccaries, tapirs, and a variety of bird species. It was a truly fulfilling experience to witness these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.

After leaving the Sirena Ranger Station, we prepare to leave the lowland heat behind and venture into the cooler mountainous regions. This transition highlights the diverse landscapes found within Corcovado National Park, each offering its own unique charm and ecosystem.
